The cottage colony at Macatawa is one of the oldest on this stretch of shoreline and it still looks the part: shingled summer houses close together, screened porches, stairs cut into the dune, and lanes barely wide enough for two cars. Most of these are seasonal properties, so the work concentrates in a narrow window at each end of summer. Everything sits on dune sand, which drains beautifully and supports almost nothing. Between the sand, the grades and the parking, placement is half the job here and the hauling is the easy part.
Opening and closing the season drives most of it: porch and attic clear-outs, water-damaged flooring, furniture that finally gave up. We run a steady line of cottage renovations where an old summer place gets insulated and winterized, which produces plaster, brittle old wiring and a lot of lath. Roofing and window replacement happen on a compressed spring schedule. Now and then a cottage comes down entirely and gets replaced, and that is a multi-load job we plan weeks ahead.
Getting to Macatawa
From the yard we head west and pick up South Shore Drive, which follows the south side of Lake Macatawa out toward the channel. Six miles, and the drive is pleasant, but the last quarter mile is the part that counts. Our driver scouts the lane, checks overhead branches and confirms there is a place to set down before the truck ever commits to a turn.

Dumpster rental in Macatawa — FAQs
Will a loaded truck get stuck in the sand out at Macatawa?
Not if we place it right. Dune sand will not hold a loaded roll-off, so we set on pavement or a compacted drive every time and lay planking under the rollers. What we will not do is drive across a sandy yard to reach a back corner. If the only firm ground is at the top of the lane, that is where the container goes and we plan the carry from there.
Our cottage lane is barely one truck wide. Is that a problem?
It is workable, we just need the heads-up. Roll-off delivery needs clear length to slide the box off the back plus overhead room, so a lane lined with parked cars and low limbs can stop us cold. Move vehicles before the delivery window and tell the neighbours. On the tightest streets we send the smaller can even when the job would justify a bigger one.
Do we need permission from the association before you deliver?
Check first, please. Several of the older lakeshore communities out this way have their own rules about where containers can sit, for how long, and whether they can be visible from the lane during high season. We follow whatever they tell you. Squaring that away before delivery day saves everyone the conversation about moving a full container.
Can you do a Friday drop and Monday pickup for a weekend cleanout?
That is our most common Macatawa schedule in spring and fall. Families come out for a weekend, empty the place, and want it gone before they head home. Book a week ahead in May or September, because those weekends are busy for us. If the weather turns, tell us and we will hold the pickup rather than leave you half finished.
