Michigan bans yard waste from landfill. That single rule organises everything on this page. Brush, branches, leaves, grass and garden clearings have to be handled as a separate clean stream and composted, which means a green load has to stay green — one bag of household trash or a stack of treated lumber thrown in on top and the whole container gets reclassified and priced as mixed waste.
So we run these as dedicated containers. Nothing but vegetation goes in, we tell you where the line is before delivery, and the load goes where it is supposed to. Storm cleanup after a straight-line wind, tree work, overgrown lot clearing, hedge removal, spring and autumn property clearing. It comes in two waves here and both of them arrive with everybody's phone ringing at once.
Keeping a green load actually green
The rule is simple and there is no flexibility in it. If it grew, it goes in. If it did not, it stays out. The ban on landfilling yard clippings is state law, administered by Michigan EGLE, so it is not a policy we invented.

- Out — bagged household trash, plastic sheeting, plant pots, netting, landscape fabric, wire, rope
- Out — treated, painted or stained lumber, fencing, deck boards, railroad ties. That is construction debris, not yard waste
- Out — rock, concrete edging, pavers and heavy soil, which belong in a heavy debris container
If a project produces both, take two boxes. It sounds like more money and it usually is not, because a contaminated green load costs more than a small clean one.
Storm damage and tree work volume
Brush occupies far more space than people estimate, because it is mostly air. A single mature maple limb spread out is an astonishing footprint, and an uncut tree crown will bridge across a container and leave half the volume unusable underneath.
Cut everything down to manageable lengths and load it deliberately. Four to six feet is a sensible maximum. Butt the heavy ends one way, stack rather than throw, and put the fine brush and leaves in around the trunk sections instead of on top. Done properly you will fit close to double what a heaped, uncut load holds. After a wind event that takes down trees across a whole street, same-day delivery is often possible if you call the yard early.
Stumps, seasons and picking a size
Call before you order if there are stumps. A stump is a solid mass of wood with soil and stone locked into the root ball, and it is heavy in a way the rest of a green load is not. Small ground-out stumps and chip are often fine. A full pulled stump off a mature tree, with the dirt still in it, is a different conversation and we would rather have it before the truck leaves than after.
The peaks are predictable. Spring clearing once the ground firms up, then autumn once the leaves are down and before the first hard freeze. Both are busy, and in the spring stretch, frost-law weight restrictions on rural roads through Allegan County and the northern Ottawa townships can push a delivery back a few days. Book with a bit of margin during that window.
On size: a hedge removal or a heavy garden clear-up usually fits a 15 yard, a big tree takedown or a lot clearing wants a 20 or a 30. Brush is bulky and light, so you are buying volume rather than tonnage — and our Michigan disposal rules guide covers the rest of what stays out.

Why does yard waste need its own dumpster in Michigan?
Because state law keeps yard waste out of landfill. Brush, leaves, grass and garden clearings are handled as a separate stream and composted, so the container has to stay clean. Mix in bagged trash, plastic or treated lumber and the whole load gets reclassified as mixed waste, priced accordingly, and the composting route is lost.
Can I put a fence or old deck boards in a yard waste container?
No. Treated, painted and stained lumber is construction debris regardless of the fact that it started out as a tree. Fencing, deck boards, railroad ties and landscape timbers all fall on that side of the line, along with posts set in concrete. Book a general debris container for those and keep the green load clean.
How should I load brush so it does not waste space?
Cut to four or six foot lengths, alternate the butt ends, and stack rather than throw. An uncut crown will bridge across the container and leave the bottom half unusable. Pack fine brush and leaves into the gaps around the heavier trunk sections. Loaded properly you will fit close to double what a heaped, uncut load holds.
Can I put tree stumps in the container?
Call the yard first. Small ground-out stumps and chip are usually fine. A full stump pulled from a mature tree, still carrying soil and stone in the root ball, is dense enough to change the sizing and sometimes needs handling separately. Knock as much dirt off as you can either way, since soil adds weight quickly and adds no value.
When is the busiest time for yard waste containers here?
Two clear peaks. Spring once the ground firms up and everyone starts clearing at the same weekend, and autumn after the leaves come down and before the first hard freeze. Storm events create a third, unpredictable one. In spring, frost-law weight limits on rural roads can also delay delivery, so book with some margin.
