Shingles are the one material where the arithmetic actually works. Count your squares, count your layers, and you can predict the weight within a fairly narrow band before anyone climbs a ladder. A square of standard three-tab runs roughly 230 to 250 pounds; architectural runs heavier, sometimes 400 pounds or more. Multiply by layers. That number, not the size of the roof, is what picks the container.

Roofing in West Michigan is a compressed business. Ice damming and snow load create the work over winter, the ground is too soft to stage on for part of the spring, and then everyone tries to get their tear-off done between August and the first hard frost. We keep shingle boxes moving through that stretch because a crew standing around waiting on a container is the most expensive thing on the job.

Squares times layers, and nothing else

Work it out before you book. These are rules of thumb, not guarantees, but they are close enough to size on.

  • A square is 100 square feet of roof surface
  • Three-tab asphalt: roughly 230 to 250 lb per square, per layer
  • Architectural or dimensional: often 350 to 450 lb per square, per layer
  • Add for felt, ice-and-water shield, old wood shake underneath and any decking you replace along the way

A 25 square roof with two layers of architectural is comfortably into multiple tons. That is why layers matter more than roof area, and why a tear-off that turns out to have a third hidden layer is the most common reason a job needs a second box. Our tear-off sizing guide runs the numbers for common Holland roof sizes.

Why the biggest box is the wrong box for shingles

This is the advice that costs us money and we give it anyway. Do not put shingles in a 40 yard. Asphalt is dense enough that you will reach legal haul weight with the container barely a third full, and you will have paid for thirty yards of air you cannot legally fill.

The right answer is usually a 10 yard for a small single-layer roof or a garage, a 15 yard for a typical single-layer house, and a 20 yard where there are two layers or a larger footprint. Beyond that, two swaps of a smaller box beat one oversized container every time — cheaper, legal, and the truck can actually lift it.

Placement, the eave, and the autumn rush

Set the container along the drip edge on the longest clear run of roof and the crew throws straight off the deck into the box. Every foot of horizontal carry is time and mess. Leave yourself room for a tarp under the rail line to catch the strays, and keep the approach clear so the truck can come back for it without the homeowner moving three cars.

Driveway protection is not optional on a tear-off. The box will be heavy and it will sit for days, and older concrete in the near-downtown streets is already cracked from freeze-thaw. Boards go under the rails as standard on our placements.

From late August the phone gets busy and stays that way until the weather closes it down. Book ahead if you can, and if a storm strips a roof overnight, same-day delivery is what that service exists for.

Roofing Dumpster Rental — your questions

What size dumpster do I need for a shingle tear-off?

Multiply squares by layers, then apply weight. A single-layer roof of about fifteen to twenty squares usually fits a 15 yard. Two layers, or anything over twenty-five squares, wants a 20 yard or a planned second haul. Architectural shingles weigh close to double three-tab, so a dimensional roof pushes you up a size on weight alone.

Why should I not use a 40 yard for shingles?

Because you will hit legal haul weight with the box roughly a third full. Asphalt is dense, and a 40 yard is designed for light bulky material like siding, insulation or cabinetry. Fill one with shingles and either the truck cannot lift it or you are paying for volume you were never allowed to use. Two smaller hauls cost less.

Can the dumpster sit right next to the house for the tear-off?

Usually, and it should. Placed along the eave on the longest clear run, the crew throws straight off the deck instead of carrying bundles across the yard. We need a straight approach to get in and out, and boards go under the rails to protect the drive. Tell us which elevation you are stripping first.

Can I include the old decking and roof vents in the load?

Yes. Plywood, one-by decking, felt, ice-and-water shield, flashing, ridge vents and old boots all go in with the shingles. Just count the decking into your weight estimate, because replacing sheathing on an older Holland house can add a surprising amount. Bulk metal flashing is often worth setting aside for a scrap recycler.

How fast can you get a container out during roofing season?

Between late August and the first hard frost we are running flat out, so booking two or three days ahead is genuinely worth it. Same-day is still common for morning calls, especially in Holland, Zeeland and Park Township. Storm damage gets priority as far as the route allows — call the yard and say it is a live open roof.
